There’s been a lot of emphasis ever since the new doctor was announced that the flirting would be over. I was overjoyed to hear we’d get a doctor who would not want to kiss every face he meets. But then Capaldi appears and loudly announced he’s not going to flirt any longer (while he’s flirting with a dinsoaur). I can’t help it…. I think there’s more chemistry between Clara and 12 than there was between her and 11…. so I’m probably just reading this into it…. But Moffat, why do you do this???
No flirting? The second doctor calls himself Clara’s boyfriend (even if meant sarcastic or ironic he is still referring to himself as Clara’s boyfriend when he’s still 11. He insinuates he’s had feelings for Clara, while Clara keeps confirming she’s never thought he was her boyfriend anyway. He even tells her it wasn’t her fault to think it, it was his own). All right, the Doctor did pretend to be her boyfriend in that one episode… But in Deep Breath we also get to see Madame Vestra telling Clara he took on this 'older' form for her. And Clara admits she’s never fancied the young men.
And if there’s no flirting or hope for us that there will be…… then why did Clara have a pin-up poster of an elderly Roman emperor on her wall? Because as far as I’m aware the 12th Doctor is keen to find out why he received the face he has now, and one of the two options we have is that it’s the face of an elderly man from old Rome.
So, quick recap.
Clara’s only pin up on her wall (when 15) was this guy who is also almost two thousand years older than her:
Peter Capaldi’s first appearance in Who
Clara never had the slightest interest in dashing young men. You know what I am saying?
Someone said that if you reverse the dialogue, it’s basically the same. Of course, then I had to try that. It’s. So. True. I didn’t even realize until now that they were both doing that to each other, and they didn’t see how it was affecting the other. Clara I bet barely remembered Oswin or ClaraOO, maybe not at all. The whole time, Eleven thought of her as a girlfriend, or at the beginning a good friend. But he mentioned a dead version of herself, and I bet when she said “I never thought you were,” she meant it. She probably thought the Doctor was keeping her because he wanted to be reminded of the mysterious girl who he mentioned, but even though that hurt, she loved him enough to stay with him. Then, Twelve probably thought all Clara wanted was Eleven when she was starting to see him as a new person, yet the same one at the same time. He was prepared to let her travel with him for as long as she wanted, no matter if all she wanted was Eleven; because even still, he’s still a little bit of Eleven, and he couldn’t possibly leave his impossible girl.
Please please please, my impossible girl
Don’t leave me just yet
(I had no intention of doing so, you know)
